Global Insurance Symposium Returns April 2021

Reply The Global Insurance Symposium (GIS) announced its 2021 conference will be held on April 26–28. This event will host insurance professionals from around the world and will feature an extensive slate of dynamic panel discussions led by preeminent executives and dignitaries, interactive demonstrations of new technologies and opportunities for attendees to help shape the future of the industry. Organizers will determine at the beginning of 2021 if the GIS will be a virtual, hybrid or in-person event at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center in Downtown Des Moines. Presented by the Greater Des Moines Partnership, the Iowa Insurance Division, the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa insurance firms, the event s host city boasts the highest concentration of insurance employment among metros in the United States. Since its inception in 2014, GIS has had thousands of attendees from 13 countries participate.

Historic Masonic Block building in downtown McGregor to get renovation

MCGREGOR, Iowa — A historic building in downtown McGregor soon will get a facelift. Black Swan Developers, a Des Moines-based company, is planning a $2.6 million to $2.8 million renovation of the Masonic Block building on Main Street. Plans for the 15,000-square-foot structure include retail space on the first floor, with apartments and condos on the second and third levels. Matt Aust, president of Black Swan, said initial renderings should be finalized in the next few weeks, but a start date for construction is still unknown. “We’re really very early on at this point … in the schematic design process,” he said. According to an article in the North Iowa Times-Clayton County Register, the Masonic Block building was constructed in 1866. In the years since, the building has housed many businesses, from drugstores to a bookstore to McGregor Library and even a bowling alley.
