Iowa Pork Congress to be mostly virtual this year
The Iowa Pork Congress will be held this week but the pandemic is forcing a series of major changes from years past.
Iowa Pork Producers Association spokeswoman Dal Grooms says the first event is at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning in Des Moines.
“We are going to start the week off with our annual meeting but that will be the only in-person event that we have,” Grooms says. “Then we’ll have education sessions and those are all going to be one-hour virtual sessions. Of course, there’s not going to be any trade show available to producers, and we know how much they love that.”
“Our producer education committee focused on a few key topics that it felt would help out Iowa farmers, said Jamee Eggers, producer education director for the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA). “Each education session is just one-hour long, including the opportunity for those who participate to ask questions of the presenters.”
Registration for the education sessions is required in order to receive the link to join the session.

Iowa is One of the Top 3 States That Loves Bacon the Most
According to a new article from Zippia, Iowa is one of the top three states that loves bacon the most. You might think it s because we re the number one pork producing state in the U.S. and the top state for pork exports, but nope! Although those things are true (according to the Iowa Pork Producers Association), this study is based solely on Instagram photos. The article reads: Ginny’s measure bacon enthusiasm by analyzing an impressive (and probably crispy) 64,000 Instagram photos. The photos were country-wide and tagged #food, #breakfast, #lunch and #dinner. The more of those pictures contained bacon, the more bacon-loving the state.

Taiwan’s parliament has approved a measure that will allow U.S. pork imports containing ractopamine, a leanness enhancing additive. Iowa Pork Producers Association President Mike Paustian says that a positive move by Taiwan that should help trading relations between them and the U.S.
Paustian says ractopamine is in the process of being phased out anyway, so the problem should work itself out going forward. He also says it’s positive Taiwan is following international trading standards by allowing pork in with ractopamine.
Pork is Taiwan’s protein of choice with the average per capita consumption around 40 kilograms. Paustian says that’s another reason it’s important to be able to ship pork to them.
