LEADER funding boost will deliver critical stimulus to rural areas

March 13, 2021 9:00 am The increased allocation of €70 million in funding for the LEADER programme for 2021 and 2022 has been welcomed by the local development companies which will be delivering the programme. The Irish Local Development Network (ILDN), which represents the 35 local development companies in Ireland, welcomed the announcement which came from government yesterday (Friday, March 12). The funding – which is up some €50 million on the €20 million earmarked for the programme in December – was by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue. Welcoming the announcement, ILDN chairman Jim Finn outlined its previous calls on the government to utilise funding available from the EU for Rural Development, for LEADER, adding:

The Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., today addressed the inaugural meeting of the Seafood Sector Taskforce, established by the Minister to make recommendations on measures to mitigate the impacts on the Irish Fishing industry, and on the coastal communities that depend on fisheries, of the fish quota share reductions arising from the EU/UK Trade & Cooperation Agreement. Addressing the Taskforce, Minister McConalogue said, “The outcome of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement will lead to a loss of €43 million per year in fish quotas for our fisheries sector, with knock-on effects on marine support industries and our coastal communities. Kilkenny LEADER Partnership welcomes Covid-19 social enterprise regeneration programme Scheme will provide grants of up to €80,000 to provide free training and mentoring across country Reporter:   ); Kilkenny LEADER Partnership a member of the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) has welcomed the announcement of an €800,000 Covid-19 Social Enterprise Regeneration Programme, funded by her Department to be administered by the ILDN. The fund will resource Local Development Companies (LDCs) and LDC consortia to provide supports to social enterprises in communities as they emerge from the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. ILDN is the representative body for Ireland’s LDCs such as Kilkenny LEADER Partnership. These 49 not-for-profit groups are building inclusive, vibrant communities and better life chances for people in every part of Ireland.
