NI steers fetching €250/head more than southern steers

April 21, 2021 8:07 am Northern Irish steers are making €250/head more than their “southern” equivalent, the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) has claimed. Commenting on the matter, ICMSA livestock chairperson Des Morrison drew attention to the 70c/kg difference between ‘Northern’ beef prices and their ‘Southern’ counterparts. Morrison described the difference as “staggering and inexplicable”, estimating that this amounts to a difference of €250 to €300 for the ‘Northern’ equivalent of ROI R3 steers in Northern and UK factory prices “We drew attention to this gulf in price earlier this year, but it’s still there and we’re now seeing it in marts close to the border versus further south,” the ICMSA chairman added.

France: Lawmakers move closer on farmer input cost bill

April 21, 2021 4:13 pm Lawmakers in France are moving closer to a new law that, if passed, would see input costs for agri-food producers incorporated into prices paid by processors and retailers. The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) has been following developments around this potential legislation, noting today (Wednesday, April 21) that a bill has been proposed in parliament in France. Pat McCormack, the ICMSA president, said that the bill would put mandatory ‘cost indicators’ into the price negotiations between farmers and processors/retailers. The proposed law aims to ensure that farmers get a better share of final consumer price by legally insisting that the cost of producing food is factored into the prices paid to farmers.

REAP pilot proposal needs to be revisited

April 19, 2021 4:23 pm An independent TD has called on the government to fulfil a Programme for Government commitment to introduce a new agri-environment scheme for farmers and to review the proposed Results-based Environment-Agri pilot Project – REAP – scheme. Galway East TD Sean Canney sad: “A new pilot scheme has been developed by the Department of Agriculture with no consultation with farm organisations. “The fund being put in place is far short of what was promised. There is only €10 million available this year despite a commitment and expectation of €150 million per annum. “The new pilot scheme is very limited and the amount of return to farmers is very little. This will create a lot of work for very little gain for farmers. The threshold is too low as the maximum grant is €1,200. This money will be eroded in costs to plan the scheme and invest in materials,” the deputy added.

Dairy beef calf scheme: Deadline looms for farmers to claim

April 15, 2021 1:41 pm The closing date for the submission of payments claims relating to the Dairy Beef Calf Programme is looming, the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) has warned. Urging farmers to get payment claims in before the closing date of Monday, April 26, the association highlighted that applications can be made online at agfood.ie The funding for this year is €5 million and expected payment is €20 per head, according to ICMSA Livestock Committee chairman Des Morrison.
