The findings of the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) in the two cases arising from complaints against Facebook by Austrian privacy campaigner Max Schrems highlight the fundamentally opposed approaches towards data and personal privacy in the EU and the US, writes Dick Roche. Dick Roche is a former Fianna Fáil politician. He was the minister of state for European affairs when Ireland conducted the two referendums on the Treaty of Lisbon of the European Union, in 2008 and 2009. The cases also shine a light on the extraordinary double standards of US policymakers who invoke concerns about data security in their efforts to push European countries in a direction that supports wider US geopolitical interests while applying lax standards domestically.

And plenty of people I don’t know, but who are public figures or who work in potentially sensitive jobs. Judges. Gardai. Prison officers. Teachers. Womens’ shelter managers. The Facebook leak of 533m people worldwide including 1.5m Irish people is a stalker’s paradise. It has almost 1.5m Irish mobile numbers, searchable against a person’s full name or occupation. In many cases, there’s additional information such as the person’s location or employer.

Irish companies in line of fire of Microsoft email hack

Irish organisations are among those affected by a global hacking attack occurring through vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s email systems, according to leading Irish cyber security experts. The hack is now known to have affected tens of thousands of organisations worldwide, including the European Banking Authority. “It’s had a huge reach and there have been organisations in Ireland, both in the private and the public sector, that have been impacted,” said Conor Flynn, chief executive of Isas, a Dublin-based IT security firm. “It has been quite significant.” Some industry data compilations estimate that 30pc of Irish servers may be vulnerable to the IT security exploit, which is caused by gaps in the technology that lets Microsoft customers get access to their work email over the internet.
