Kilkenny school principal Joe McKeown elected new President of INTO If keeping schools open is a top priority, keeping teachers safe must be a top priority Reporter: sam.matthews@kilkennypeople.ie The new president of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation is Joe McKeown, principal teacher in St Patrick s De La Salle BNS, Kilkenny ); A Kilkenny man has been elected President of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO). Joe McKeown, principal teacher in St Patrick s De La Salle BNS, was elected today at the INTO Virtual Congress 2021.  Married to Teresa, they have two children, Ian and Niamh. Mr McKeown began his teaching career in St Canice’s Primary School, Kilkenny when he graduated from St Patrick’s College in 1982. He spent three years as principal of Kilkenny School Project from 1995-1998.

Mr Martin was speaking after teachers’ unions said they are to hold ballots for strike action unless the Government agrees to prioritise their members for vaccination by the end of the current school year.

Teachers union vote for motion which could pave way to strike action

Teachers’ unions have voted to hold ballots for strike action if the Government refuses to make a U-turn on its decision not to prioritise teachers for the Covid-19 vaccine. The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (Asti), the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (Into) and TUI passed a motion at its respective annual congresses condemning the recent changed to the priority list. The Government confirmed the vaccination programme will be based on an age-basis rather than occupation. In a joint statement, the teachers’ unions urged the Government to “immediately reinstate” education staff as a priority group within the national vaccination programme.
