Academic freedom is in the news and not just in Britain. At least four governments across Europe have claimed they need to protect those academics who assert they are a persecuted minority within universities. These developments signal a heating up of the culture wars.
10 new members join European University Associaton
The European University Association (EUA) has announced that the EUA Council has approved the applications of ten new individual members to join the association. The EUA represents more than 800 universities and national rectors’ conferences in 48 European countries.
The new individual full members (higher education institutions that conduct research, provide degree programmes in two of the three study cycles and receive direct public funding) are:
Azerbaijan University (Azerbaijan)
East European University (Georgia)
Nebrija University (Spain)
WSB University (Poland)
The new individual associate members (higher education institutions that award degrees at the first and second cycle level, but do not meet the research criteria as set for individual full members) are:

EC launches Action Plan on synergies between civil, defence and space industries
The European Commission has presented an Action Plan on Synergies between civil, defence and space industries. The Action Plan was launched on 22 February 2021 and aims at further enhancing Europe s technological edge and supporting its industrial base. According to the EC, its Action Plan is devised against the background that, for the first time, EU funding presents opportunities to reinforce European innovation by exploring and exploiting the disruptive potential of technologies at the interface between defence, space and civil uses, such as cloud, processors, cyber, quantum and artificial intelligence.
