The European Commission is today complementing the successful EU Vaccines Strategy with a strategy on COVID-19 therapeutics to support the development and availability of much-needed COVID-19 therapeutics, including for the treatment of ‘long COVID’. Today’s Strategy covers the full lifecycle of medicines: from research, development and manufacturing to procurement and deployment.
It is part of the strong European Health Union, in which all EU countries prepare and respond together to health crises and ensure the availability of affordable and innovative medical supplies – including the therapeutics needed to treat COVID-19.
The Strategy includes clear actions and targets, including authorising three new therapeutics to treat COVID-19 by October 2021 and possibly two more by end of the year. Concretely:

The opposition Socialists said on Sunday that a “new era” was needed in Hungarian health care to be implemented through the “revolutionary programme” of the European Health Union.
Socialist MEP István Ujhelyi told an online press conference on Facebook that the death of over 26,000 Hungarians [in fact, more than 27,000 – editor’s note] caused by coronavirus demonstrated the state of Hungary’s health-care system which he said directly resulted from “government carelessness” and policies that handled health care as a low priority.
He said the Socialists believe that access to health is a basic human right and the party accordingly gives highlighted priority to health-care service development in its programme.

De Europese ruimte voor gezondheidsgegevens heeft tot doel de digitale mogelijkheden optimaal te benutten om hoogwaardige gezondheidszorg te verstrekken en ongelijkheden te verminderen. Zij zal de toegang tot gezondheidsgegevens voor preventie, diagnose en behandeling, onderzoek en innovatie, en beleidsvorming en wetgeving bevorderen. Het recht van personen om hun eigen gezondheidsgegevens te beheren zal centraal staan in de Europese ruimte voor gezondheidsgegevens. Deelname aan de raadpleging is mogelijk tot en met 26 juli 2021.
