However, the policy has already generated regional tensions, particularly with its neighbours Greece and Cyprus. At the end of last year, Greece announced a significant weapons purchase as Turkish President Recep Erdogan continued with the offensive.

Earlier this week it emerged the German Chancellor encouraged the blocking of a bid by four European health ministers to secure large orders of the coronavirus vaccine last year. Smaller member states said they were already missing the UK s influence in Brussels amid signs that Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron plan to waste no time in imposing their dominance over the bloc. Socialist MEP: Szombathely Backs European Health Union Plan
The city of Szombathely, in western Hungary, is among the first localities to back the European Commission’s plan to create a European Health Union, Socialist Party MEP István Ujhelyi said in a statement on Tuesday.
Ujhelyi on Tuesday participated in an online conference organised by Budapest’s Institute for Social Democracy and the Brussels-based Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) on opportunities to expand the European Health Union plan in Hungary.
Ujhelyi said the European Union’s next multiannual budget allocates more than 5 billion euros towards health-care programmes, most of which he said should be spent directly on local council schemes. The European Health Union should also cover the development of the health industry, he said, adding that Szombathely was poised to be a leader in this field in the coming period.

The Commission is allocating €25 million to Greece under the Emergency Support Instrument to support the medical capacity in reception facilities for migrants living on the Greek mainland and on the islands. This funding will both reinforce the medical infrastructure in the reception centres and support public hospitals in host communities in Greece facing increased demand due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On this grant decision, Promoting our European Way of Life Vice President Margaritis Schinas said: “Being European means protecting the most vulnerable. With today s funding we are helping migrant and host communities in Greece to improve access healthcare for all, particularly important during the pandemic.”
