Looking back on a memorable 2021 indoor season | NEWS

That has certainly been the case for athletics in recent months with the desire for top-level indoor competition being met thanks to the efforts from adaptable and inventive meeting organisers. It meant that the World Athletics Indoor Tour was able to go ahead with 25 competitions taking place safely in 11 different countries across Europe and North America. In all, 1353 athletes from 84 countries participated in the wider series of Gold, Silver and Bronze level meetings with all six continental areas represented. At the end of the five Gold-level meetings, 11 series winners – representing seven countries and three continental areas – were confirmed, each earning wildcard entries to the World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade22:

There was much at stake. After a golden few years of medals and national records, 2019 had been the hardest period of her career. Injuries, doubts and falling out of love with the sport that had made her a household name in the Netherlands.  But little by little, Vetter pieced it all back together. Little goals, delivering big results. She approached the 2021 indoor season with trepidation but departed with another title and some big PBs. Anouk Vetter is back in the game.

And Ellie Baker, 22, who grew up in Borehamwood, has her sights on even greater stages after an impressive showing in the European Indoor Championships earlier this month. Runner Ellie, who competes in the 800 metres, finished fourth in her debut senior final which she described as a big step forward for her. Ellie, a former pupil at Shenley Primary School, tweeted: I’m proud of the way I ran the last few days & I enjoyed every minute of it! Being an athlete you always want more but processing it, 4th in Europe is a big step forward for me & I can’t wait for what’s to come. Thank you for the support.

50 days to go - World Athletics Relays Silesia21 The Polish women s 4x400m team members celebrate their world silver in Doha (© Maja Hitij/Getty Images) More than 1000 athletes on 150 relay teams from 45 nations are getting ready for the World Athletics Relays Silesia21, with just 50 days to go. Among them is local favourite Justyna Swiety-Ersetic, who will be looking to add to her 4x400m success when she forms part of the home team for the event at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland, on 1-2 May. Poland won the women s 4x400m at the last edition of the World Athletics Relays in Yokohama and secured silver in the event at the World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, with Swiety-Ersetic on both teams.
