London, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Jan, 2021 ) :The British indoor athletics championships have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, governing body British Athletics announced on Friday.
The championships were to have taken place next month in Glasgow and would have acted as a qualification event for the European Indoor Championships scheduled to be held in Torun, Poland, on March 5-7.
British Athletics said while elite sport was able to continue in Britain despite a rapidly rising death toll as authorities fight a more infectious variant of Covid-19, the logistics of bringing several hundred athletes to the event and preventing the spread of the virus were too problematic.

British Athletics has cancelled its indoor championships set to begin in Glasgow in February due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the governing body said on Friday.
British Athletics said that the process of testing athletes, coaches, technical officials and volunteers among others would not sufficiently mitigate the risks involved and it had taken the decision to scrap the Feb. 20-21 meet as a precaution.

More than 500 attendees based across Britain and overseas were expected at the event with elite sport allowed to organise competitions despite a COVID-19 lockdown across the United Kingdom to stem the spread of the virus.

A UKA statement said: The decision was taken in light of the ongoing pandemic to ensure the safety of all those due to participate; athletes, coaches, technical officials, volunteers, event and venue staff as well as protecting the Glasgow community. At the present time, the process of testing all those attending the Championships from across the UK, seen as an essential measure, would not sufficiently mitigate the risks. British Athletics recognises our wider social responsibility to reduce Covid-19 transmission and to not over-burden the NHS.

Hugues Fabrice Zango has set a new indoor triple jump world record and become just the seventh man in history to clear the 18-metre barrier.
Zango leapt 18.07m in Aubière in France to add 0.15 to the previous indoor world record, which was set by his coach Teddy Tamgho in 2011.
Tamgho, who is French, had previously jumped 17.91m in Aubière in 2011, while his 17.92 effort came in Paris at the European Indoor Championships later that year.
Zango is Burkinabe, and his nation s first-ever holder of an athletics world record.
The 27-year-old - a bronze medallist at the 2019 World Athletics Championships outdoors in Doha, bounced to 18.07m with his sixth and final effort in Aubière.
