Understanding the effects of COVID-19 restrictions on physical and mental health
The new survey of 5,170 adults aged over 18, across the UK, Italy, Finland, Germany and Poland, sought to better understand people s perceptions of the effect of COVID-19 restrictions on their physical and mental health, and aspects they felt most impacted their mood. It also sought to explore the role that everyday pleasures such as coffee had, and other simple ways that people found to lift their mood during Lockdowns and associated restrictions
Expert insight: Key research challenges in validating immune system benefits Despite huge consumer and industry interest in immunity, the list of food components that have gained regulatory approval for immune-support health claims is still limited to a handful of vitamins and minerals. To understand why and what can be done, we spoke to Anita Hartog, Senior Scientist Nutrition and Health at NIZO, who has over twenty years industrial experience studying the health and immunological impact of food.
Why do so few components have validated immune system benefits?
Anita Hartog: Any health claim for a food or supplement needs verifiable evidence to support it, typically in the form of a randomized, placebo-controlled human intervention trial. For immune system benefits, this could be a field study to investigate the incidence, severity and duration of a specific infection, or a controlled infection or vaccination challenge trial.
