European media alliance raises alarm over Czech TV independence

European media alliance raises alarm over Czech TV independence Reuters 7 hrs ago PRAGUE, April 9 (Reuters) - The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an alliance of public media groups, warned on Friday over increasing political pressure on independent public broadcaster Czech TV heading into an election. With the spotlight turned on media independence in neighboring central European countries like Hungary and Poland, the Czech Republic is now facing scrutiny over a battle to appoint members of the council overseeing Czech TV. Critics worry the nominated new members are too politically aligned. The station runs investigative reports and covers issues often unpopular with ruling figures.

April 8: This day, that year in music history

1994: Kurt Cobain dies. The body of Kurt Cobain, frontman of the iconic grunge band Nirvana, was discovered lying on the floor of his Seattle home by electrician Gary Smith, who was working on the singer’s greenhouse. It was three days after he had taken his life. Local radio station KXRX broke the news at 9.40am. The gun he reportedly shot himself with was found next to his body as was a suicide note that said, ‘I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing . . . for too many years now’. Forensics discovered a high concentration of heroin and traces of Valium in the singer’s body.

Populists are threatening Europe s independent public broadcasters

E VERY SELF-RESPECTING European country needs a public broadcaster. So after Slovenia seceded from Yugoslavia in 1991, it gave Radio-Television of Slovenia ( RTV-SLO) a mandate to report independently, unlike the state propaganda that passed for news under communism. Indeed, RTV-SLO has proved too independent for Slovenia’s current prime minister, Janez Jansa. For more than a year he has been browbeating the network’s journalists on social media. Wags have consequently dubbed Mr Jansa “Marshal Twito”, a nod to Josip Tito, Yugoslavia’s longtime dictator. His government is refusing to pay RTV- SLO’s budget, and wants to pass a new media law that will make it easier to control.
