European Rare Diseases Supplement 2021

European Rare Diseases Supplement 2021 A special supplement looking at European and global efforts tackling rare diseases. The last year has been unlike any other. As the world responds to COVID-19, many of us face uncertainty, disconnect, and an evolving new normal. Unfortunately, these are not new experiences for those living with or caring for someone with a rare disease. We know this journey, and we can build on it to foster empathy and solidarity in our society for people living with a rare disease. We also know that many people living with a rare disease are facing greater health challenges during the pandemic: severely disrupted essential treatment and care; and lives faced with heightened risk and anxiety. Everyone in our community has felt this extra vulnerability, this need for extra support, and, too often, this extra physical or mental suffering. We cannot lose sight of what we want to achieve within a changing environment. Throughout this year, health has been thrust

Rare disease patients at risk from no-deal Brexit

17 Dec 2020   |   News Rare disease patients at risk from no-deal Brexit As UK looks about to lose its place in virtual European clinical networks, Cambridge University geneticist says ‘this isn’t some nebulous thing’ - a disease might only affect 50 people in the UK, but the top expert may be in Amsterdam Failure to do a post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union will see the UK excluded from the European Reference Networks set up to improve the care of people with rare diseases, warn researchers. “We wish to emphasise the detrimental health implications for the one in 17 UK citizens who are diagnosed with a rare disease,” over 50 researchers wrote in a letter to The Lancet medical journal.

Bescherming van de volksgezondheid: Raad en Parlement voorlopig akkoord over EU4Health-programma voor 2021‑2027

The German presidency of the Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional deal on the EU4Health programme for 2021-2027. With a budget of EUR 5.1 billion, the new reinforced programme provides a strong basis for Union action in the health field based on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. It comes at a time when EU citizens still experience the impact of a major health threat and the resulting human suffering and severe socio-economic consequences. This agreement shows the EU’s determination to protect the health of its citizens. This programme, with its budget and scope, gives our Union the tools and capacity to better prepare for and cope with future health crises. At the same time, it allows a strong focus on long-term health issues, such as cancer and mental health. I expect that EU4Health will have a clear EU valued added in complementing member states health policies.
