Twitter is fined £410,000 by Ireland s data regulator for a bug that made private tweets public

Ireland s data watchdog has fined Twitter £410,000 for a bug that made private tweets public. A 2019 probe found a glitch had affected Android users of Twitter s app by making their protected tweets appear publicly.   In particular the fine was levied due to Twitter s failure to notify the breach on time to the DPC and a failure to adequately document the breach, Ireland s Data Protection Commission said in a statement.  In the first sanction against the Silicon Valley giant under new EU data privacy rules, Ireland s Data Protection Commission handed down a 450,000 euro penalty (pictured: the Twitter logo) In the first sanction against the Silicon Valley giant under new EU data privacy rules, the Irish watchdog handed down a 450,000 euro penalty on Tuesday.

Ask a CCO: How to meet data analytics expectations of both board and regulators

ROB CLARK: Data analytics has long been a staple within our compliance framework.  We are implementing a new ERP which will further enable management and the compliance office to analyze transactional data and quickly highlight and investigate anomalies.   MARK CONSTABLE: I think the key to a strong compliance management program and a good relationship with federal and state regulators is a focus on self-identification and self-correcting potential deficiencies in processes or procedures.  I never want a regulator to tell me something I don’t already know. Using data analytics for Community Reinvestment Act, by way of example, allows us to statistically analyze our HMDA and small business loan data to ensure we are meeting the credit needs of our community and assessment area. The analysis tells us the impact of our lending program on low

Lessons from a Privacy Shield post-mortem on Capitol Hill

REUTERS/Kacper Pempel/Illustration/File Photo On December 9, the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing on the consequences of the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) invalidation of the EU-US Privacy Shield, the main vehicle to allow transfers of data from the European Union (EU) to the United States and on the uncertain future of transatlantic data flows. The event lacked the passion and publicity of pre-election Congressional inquisitions of US technology company leaders on competition and content regulation. But the sober, factual, and concerned tone of the proceedings illuminated the deepening transatlantic divide over data transfers, and it highlighted the early challenge the subject looks to pose for President-elect Joe Biden’s administration, which is eager to repair US-EU

Twitter s tiny $547K GDPR fine leaves many scratching their heads

By Neil Hodge2020-12-15T20:19:00+00:00 Following a nearly two-year investigation and decision-making process, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) on Tuesday fined Twitter €450,000 (U.S. $547,000) for breaching Europe’s strict privacy rules for failing to report a data breach within the required 72 hours and document it properly. The Irish DPC said the fine under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an “effective, proportionate and dissuasive measure.” Others are underwhelmed, as the penalty is equivalent to the social media firm’s earnings made in 90 minutes. The Irish DPC began its investigation in January 2019 after Twitter self-reported a data breach linked to its Android app late due to “an unanticipated consequence of staffing between Christmas Day 2018 and New Years’ Day.” The breach affected at least 89,000 people.
