The first headline target proposes that the employment rate of the 20-64 be increased to 78%, from 72.5% in 2020. In line with this, the gender employment gap should be halved, and the share of young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs) reduced to 9%, from 12.6% in 2019.  Aiming to revive the employment agenda in the EU through concrete targets is a valuable move. The pandemic has led to major distortions in the labour market and added debt burden to the public purse. Tapping into the job growth potential of countries long mocked for their ‘inactivity traps’ could bring much welcome welfare and fiscal gains. Give social rights teeth to improve people s lives, demand S&Ds ahead of Commission Action Plan

Published: Share: Ahead of this week’s presentation of the European Commission’s Action Plan on how to implement the 2017 European Pillar of Social Rights, the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament issued a strong call for making social rights a reality for all Europeans by introducing binding targets. Iratxe García, S&D Group leader, said: “9 out of 10 Europeans consider social Europe a priority. At the Porto Summit, it will be up to EU leaders to deliver on people’s hopes for our shared future. Getting young people into quality jobs, ensuring men and women are paid the same and guaranteeing affordable housing - all these rights are already laid down in the European Pillar of Social Rights. Yet, governments are too often only paying lip service to these principles. This must change. It is time to deliver.
