President Biden’s administration has opened the door to a direct meeting with Iranian officials in a bid to halt the intensifying standoff over the regime’s nuclear program and eventually restore the 2015 nuclear deal scrapped by former President Donald Trump’s team.
“Washington should be using this time to build bridges with allies abroad over Iran not to signal support for talks that aim to claw-back a fast-expiring bad deal,” Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told JNS.
The Joe Biden administration said it’s willing to sit down with Iran to discuss renewing the 2015 nuclear pact, though a senior US official noted the talks must cover other “regional issues” – a potential deal-breaker for Tehran.
