But this has never been the case in North Macedonia, a multiethnic country in the Balkan region. The complexity of the process, its politicisation, and fears over the potential repercussions of revealing the exact breakdown of different ethnicities have left the NATO country and aspiring European Union-member without census data for 20 years.

Currently in European countries there are several interpretations on the use of the term ‘probiotic’ in the labelling and advertising of food products. They range from a very strict approach that does not allow the use of the term, to a more open approach that does allow the use of the term, referring to a category of products – if there is no reference to a specific health claim. “All actors would gain from clear rules on the use of the term ‘probiotic’ in food and food labelling” Rosanna Pecere states.
