Rota Naval Base hosting two-third of the European Union carrier capability

The Italian aircraft carrier CAVOUR stops in Rota on her maiden voyage to the United States Tuesday, 2nd of February 2021 will mark a special day for the Spanish-US Naval Base of Rota, since the Italian aircraft carrier CAVOUR will be moored close to the Spanish all-deck warship JUAN CARLOS I, for a one-day logistic port visit before her leap across the Atlantic Ocean to reach Norfolk, the world’s largest Naval Station. After passing the Strait of Gibraltar, CAVOUR will be hosted by the strategically located Rota Naval Station, which hosts, since 2019, the Operational Headquarters running the European Union Naval Operation ATALANTA.

During the meeting, both stressed the importance of close cooperation, as well as, tactical coordination including the willingness of both Task Forces to support each other and even plan and conduct combined focused operation in a close future in order to expand the covered areas. EU NAVFOR ATALANTA PROVIDES SUPPORT TO UNODC YEMEN COAST GUARD REGENERATION STRATEGY

On the 1 st and 2 nd of December, EU NAVFOR ATALANTA participated in a panel discussion organized by the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) during which the Yemeni Coast Guard, and the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP), launched the Yemen Coast Guard Regeneration Strategy and Implementation Plan. The two days of panel discussions covered illicit trafficking by sea and maritime security in the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea regions. Besides the contributions of EU NAVFOR ATALANTA representatives, other recognised experts from the United Nations Panel of Experts (UNPOE) for Yemen, Risk Intelligence, Conflict Armament Research, as well as former members of the UNPOE for Somalia made contributions to the panel discussions.

“Another day rises for merchant shipping. Over the last decades, merchant ships have been affected by situations that jeopardize their safety all over the world and therefore having a huge impact on the world economy. One of the regions that has been most affected in the last decade is the Horn of Africa, due to the phenomenon of piracy in the Gulf of Aden and in the Somalia Basin, Indian Ocean, where about 80% of crude transported by maritime routes passes every year. This phenomenon forced merchant shipping to adapt, implementing internal protection measures, embarking on private security teams and choosing alternative routes, all of which made the costs associated with commercial activity more expensive, harming all consumers and thus affecting the worldwide economy.
