From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health officials around the world have looked to use the benefits of big data and the ubiquity of smartphones to help track and stop the spread of the virus. The ability to track smartphone users with location data and Bluetooth to better understand community interaction and the geographic spread of the virus appeared to be a practical and societal good.
But the promise of digital tracking hit two roadblocks: First, compliance with the legal requirements of data privacy regulations, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, the European Union General Data Protection Regulation and federal and state protections of personal health care information, such as HIPPA and, secondly, general concerns that sensitive personal information could be subject to government misuse or unauthorized disclosure by hackers.
Data protection startup BigID raises $70M on $1B unicorn valuation

Data protection and privacy startup BigID Inc. announced today that it has raised $70 million in new funding to deliver new applications for using data for data privacy, security and governance.
The Series D round was led by Salesforce Ventures and Tiger Global and included Glynn Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Scale Venture Partners and Boldstart Ventures. The round was raised on a valuation of more than $1 billion, giving BigID unicorn status for the first time. Including the new funding, BigID has raised $216 million to date.
Founded in 2016, BigID develops and offers software that assists companies to secure customer data and to satisfy privacy regulations. Cloud hosting provider Netgain struck by ransomware attack

Cloud hosting and information technology services provider Netgain Technology Inc. has been struck by a ransomware attack that has forced the company to take some of its data centers offline.
According to Bleeping Computer Wednesday, the ransomware attack was first reported by Netgain to its customers on Nov. 24. An email Dec. 4 warned customers of “system outages or slowdowns” from an ongoing cyberattack targeting the hosting provider. Another email Dec. 5 to customers stated that Netgain had been forced to shut down some of its data centers to isolate and contain the ransomware attack.
