Dutch to limit forest biomass subsidies, possibly signaling EU sea change

Dutch to limit forest biomass subsidies, possibly signaling EU sea change by Justin Catanoso on 9 March 2021 The Dutch Parliament in February voted to disallow the issuing of new subsidies for 50 planned forest biomass-for-heat plants, a small, but potentially key victory for researchers and activists who say that the burning of forests to make energy is not only not carbon neutral, but is dirtier than burning coal and bad climate policy. With public opinion opposing forest biomass as a climate solution now growing in the EU, the decision by the Netherlands could be a bellwether. In June, the EU will review its Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), whether to continue allowing biomass subsidies and not counting biomass emissions at the smokestack.

Podcast: Are biomass and hydropower false climate solutions?

by Mike Gaworecki on 10 February 2021 On this episode of the Mongabay Newscast, we look at two energy-related technologies that are being promoted as climate solutions, biomass and hydropower, which might have unintended consequences that hamper their ability to supply clean energy and thus might not be sustainable solutions at all. Our first guest is Justin Catanoso, a professor at Wake Forest University and long-time Mongabay correspondent. Catanoso tells us about the loopholes in renewable energy policies that have allowed the biomass industry to flourish under the guise of “carbon neutrality,” even though the burning of biomass for energy releases more carbon emissions than burning coal.

However, issues related to food scarcity use of food crops for production of bioethanol are unfavorable and thus, are expected to hinder the market growth during the forecast period. In addition, high initial production cost of cellulosic ethanol is also expected to affect the market negatively. However, the introduction of second- third-generation biofuels is expected to provide lucrative opportunities for the market growth.
