Bulgarian courts failed to punish Holocaust denier

(JTA) — Bulgaria’s judicial system erred when it ignored complaints that a far-right politician was inciting to discriminate against Jews and Roma people, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled. The ruling February 16th was on appeals to the European court by two Bulgarian Jews, Gabriela Behar and Katrin Gutman, and two Roma citizens, Kremena Budinova and Vasil Chaprazov, about their judiciary’s refusal to act on their complaints against the far-right politician Volen Siderov of the Ataka party, Radio Liberty reported. Among the remarks by Siderov was his assertion in a book from 2002 about “the great hoax called the Holocaust — the account that six million Jews were gassed and burned.”

Ukraine takes Russia to European Court of Human Rights over alleged assassinations

Ukraine has taken Russia to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) accusing Moscow of assassinating opponents. Kyiv brought proceedings before the Strasbourg-based court on Friday, alleging that Russia has carried out targeted assassination operations of alleged opponents . Ukraine said Russia had violated the right to life stipulated in Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Moscow has also been accused of failing to investigate killings and of deliberately mounting cover-up operations aimed at frustrating efforts to find the persons responsible. Ukraine s complaint concerns assassinations carried out in Russia and on the territory of other states, including other member states of the Council of Europe, outside a situation of armed conflict , the court said in its statement.

EU weighs troubled Russia ties, fresh sanctions

European Union foreign ministers agreed Monday to impose new sanctions against Russian officials linked to the jailing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and expressed concern that the government in Moscow appears to see the 27-nation bloc as an adversary. “We reached a political agreement to impose restrictive measures against those responsible for (Navalny's) arrest and sentencing and persecution,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said after chairing their meeting in Brussels. Borrell suggested that those targeted wouldn't include oligarchs close to President Vladimir Putin, as Navalny's supporters have requested.
