EU members ‘must step up’ for European Universities
The Council of the European Union, comprising ministers of EU member states, has called on European governments and higher education systems to support the European Universities Initiative (EUI) and make it a central to building a European Education Area by 2025.
The ministers have urged more cooperation between education authorities, higher education institutions and stakeholders to remove obstacles to European level cooperation.
In this context, they suggest exploring the need for and feasibility of joint European degrees within the alliance of ‘European Universities’.

Minister Harris meets European Commissioner Gabriel to discuss Education, Innovation and Research
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris has today (Wednesday, 19 May 2021) met with European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Mariya Gabriel.
The meeting focused on Ireland’s plans for a new national Strategy for Research and Innovation, and an expansion of the European Universities Initiative
.
Speaking today, Minister Harris said:
“Ireland has experienced significant challenges arising from Brexit but it also has created many opportunities too, particularly in education, research and innovation.
“Today’s meeting offered an opportunity to brief the Commissioner on our exciting new plans for an International Education Strategy, and a new Research and Innovation plan.
