Five things to know as the new European Tour season begins at the 2021 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
The start of a new season
The European Tour season gets underway this week with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, one of four premium Rolex Series events which underpin the 2021 season.
Held over Abu Dhabi GC, the tournament has the distinction of being the first Rolex Series event for the third consecutive season, after being elevated to Rolex Series status in 2019.
Westwood defends
Lee Westwood began 2020 by making history in the Middle East with the 25th Tour victory of his career in Abu Dhabi, and ended it by winning the season-ending Race to Dubai in December - 20 years after being crowned European Number One for the first time.
European Points Race restarts in Abu Dhabi

The European Tour begins its season at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship – the first of four Rolex Series events on the 2021 Race to Dubai – and will offer players the chance to earn points on the European Points List for the first time since the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in March 2020.
As per the revised qualification criteria, all points earned on both the European and World Points list will be multiplied by 1.5 until May 9. All points earned from May 12 to September 12 will be multiplied by two.
Before the postponement of European qualifying, Tommy Fleetwood (3,927.42), Jon Rahm (3,747.50), Rory McIlroy (2,679.44) and Victor Perez (2,669.95) occupied the four qualifying places on the European Points List, with all but Jon Rahm playing this week in the Middle East.

Rahm continues qualifying form in 2021

Jon Rahm extended his lead at the top of the World Points List as the qualification process for The Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits resumed at the PGA Tour’s Sentry Tournament of Champions.
The Spaniard, who made his Ryder Cup debut at The 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, finished in a tie for seventh at Kapalua’s Plantation Course.
The event saw the restart of the European Ryder Cup Points Race, with points available to be earned on the World Points List. As per the revised qualification criteria, all points earned on both the European and World Points list will be multiplied by 1.5 until May 9. All points earned from May 12 to September 12 will be multiplied by 2.

The European Tour today confirmed that the qualification process for next yearâs Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin will resume on January 1,2021 and conclude at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday September 12, 2021.
The process, which began at last Septemberâs BMW PGA Championship, was suspended after the conclusion of the 2020 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in March this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic which shut down the European Tour at that point.
