MEP Marina Kaljurand calls on Russia to end occupation of Georgian territories

MEP Marina Kaljurand calls on Russia to end occupation of Georgian territories 10:48, 25.01.2021 European Parliament member, Marina Kaljurand, echoed “the ECHR historic judgment in the inter-state case of Georgia vs. Russia (II) on the August 2008 war.” Kaljurand said, “this much-awaited ruling highlights two important elements.” “First, the ECHR acknowledges that the Russian Federation has been exercising continued, effective control over Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region / South Ossetia since August 12, 2008. Second, the ECHR establishes numerous grave violations of the European Convention of Human Rights by the Russian Federation during and in the war aftermath. Its failure to investigate war crimes and systematic human rights abuses in the occupied regions ever since, as well as its refusal to enable ethnic Georgians to return to their homes,” MEP noted.

Stano referred to the January 21 judgement in the inter-state case, which says that Russia violated several articles of the European Convention on Human rights during the 2008 conflict in Georgia and carried out ethnic cleansing of Georgians.

The ruling clearly concludes that after 12 August 2008 the Russian Federation, exercising effective control over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, violated several provisions of the European Convention of Human Rights. Achieving justice and accountability is an important part of conflict resolution and the EU calls upon the Russian Federation to ensure the proper follow-up of the ruling.
