Neither Government nor NPHET expected current level of COVID-19 surge, junior minister says

Share this article The Government and NPHET were both caught by surprise over the recent rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, a Junior Minister has said. Minister of State for European Affairs Thomas Byrne defended the Government s decision to allow hospitality to reopen along with household visits as part of the easing of restrictions before Christmas. This is despite recommendations from NPHET that only one should be permitted from December 1st. Additionally, the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan warned in early December that a challenging level of cases in early January is more likely than not . It comes as the CEO of the HSE said we have yet to see the worst impacts of the recent surge in coronavirus on the health service.

Brexit talks in end phase as hopes of EU-UK trade deal rise

Share this article Talks between the European Union and the United Kingdom on a post-Brexit trade deal are in the end phase , an EU official has said. With both sides trying to reach an agreement before the end of the transition period next week, sources in Brussels and London have said a Brexit deal could be close. There were suggestions earlier that an announcement could be made as early as Wednesday evening, but that deadline appears to be slipping. Britain left the EU at the end of January and entered into an 11-month transition period, following EU rules and regulations whilst trying to negotiate a free trade deal by the end of this year.
