The Hydrogen Stream: 39,700 km European hydrogen network planned, Germany means business
Several heavyweights in Germany have announced projects to move forward with green hydrogen. RWE, Uniper and Bosch have all announced large-scale projects and the German government has allocated €52 million for hydrogen research. The European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative is proposing a hydrogen network of 39,700 km by 2040, with further growth expected after 2040.Dusseldorf-based energy company Uniper plans to establish a German national hub for hydrogen in Wilhelmshaven, a coastal town in western Germany that was originally meant to host an LNG import terminal. The change in plans seems .

There is likely to be demand across Europe for producing hydrogen from renewable energy, but the right regulatory frameworks and legislation need to be in place for the green hydrogen industry to find success.
A panel of industry stakeholders and experts taking part in a session on green hydrogen at the Large-Scale Solar Europe event today appeared to be broadly in agreement that a lot can be done to bring down the barriers to green hydrogen’s commercialisation, including the complexity of structuring multiple off-taker agreements and the still-high cost of electrolysers.
Plans for European Hydrogen Backbone expanded
Ambitious plans to create a dedicated hydrogen transport infrastructure in Europe have been expanded.
Originally unveiled in July 2020 by 11 European gas infrastructure companies from nine EU members states, the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) report has now expanded to nearly 40,000km covering 11 new countries, with 12 European gas TSOs joining the EHB initiative.
With recent technological advancements in the field of hydrogen, the pipeline now requires lower investment costs and also now utilises two-thirds of repurposed natural gas pipelines, EHB has found.
The updated vision for the EHB proposes to build a 39,700km hydrogen network, instead of the original 23,000km, that connects 21 European countries by 2040.
