Updated: 8:52 AM EDT May 5, 2021 A 92-year-old woman was killed in a crash last weekend in Ocala and police said a 98-year-old man was behind the wheel.The crash happened Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Southwest 33rd Avenue and West State Road 40. According to a report from the Ocala Police Department, Juanita Tyo, 92, was the passenger in a Mercury being driven by Augustus Tyo. Witnesses told police that the Mercury had pulled up to a flashing yellow light to make a left turn into a gas station. When the vehicle made the turn, it traveled into the path of a black Honda, which slammed into the passenger side of the Mercury. Juanita Tyo was pinned in the vehicle as a result of the crash and taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center after she was freed. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. Augustus Tyo told police he was turning into the RaceTrac gas station and did not see the Honda traveling westbound.
Officers identified the victim as Jillian Dawson. They said the 31-year-old woman is considered homeless.
Dawson was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center for precautionary reasons, police officials said.
Authorities were told Dawson was standing near the railroad tracks when a ladder from a passing CSX train hit the woman s left arm.
One of the train s operators told an officer that Dawson walked away after the train stopped. The incident occurred in the 600 block of Southwest Third Street.
Police officials searched the area and found Dawson at Interfaith Emergency Services, a place that provides food and services to low-income and homeless people. Interfaith is located at 435 NW Second St.
