In weather emergencies, a lack of Spanish-language information endangers the public Kay Nolan © Matt McClain/The Washington Post A man stands on a flooded Miami street in Hurricane Irma's wake on Sept. 10, 2017. (Matt McClain/The Washington Post) During extreme weather, the ability to receive storm warnings can save your life. But many non-English speakers in the United States have limited access to information about hazards as dangerous as tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires and floods. Emergency personnel, media broadcasters and weather forecasters have ramped up efforts to serve the Spanish-speaking population, but it’s a work in progress. An incident in 2013 exposed the danger of the lack of non-English severe weather information. As a tornado moved through El Reno, Okla., a family of seven took refuge in a drainage ditch They were originally from Guatemala and warnings of the risk for severe flash flooding never reached the Spanish-speaking family. All drowned. A National Weather Service review concluded that a lack of Spanish-language communication was a factor in the tragedy.

Patrick Crocker “have knowledge of the workings of Westwood’s patented program. Furthermore, these employees are presently attempting to use this knowledge to lure customers away from Westwood by informing customers in the market that the LRN program is comparable. Such acts constitute willful and deliberate infringement, entitling Westwood to enhanced damages and attorney’s fees.” LRN issued the following statement in response to the suit: “LRN believes the claims are legally and factually baseless and intends to vigorously defend against those claims. LRN was launched in 2015 by
Steve Swick, a radio station owner/operator. LRN developed and uses its own technology and built its business station by station and format by format. LRN’s relentless focus on quality programming, affiliate service, and fair inventory pricing has propelled its growth to a leadership position in the radio industry with 14 formats and supports hundreds of affiliates nationally. Six years after LRN’s successful launch in 2015, Westwood One is apparently giving up on trying to fairly compete and instead is trying to now use the courts to do what its programmers, engineers and affiliate salespeople could not do. On behalf of the independent radio owners and operators in our industry, please understand that LRN will not be bullied by a corporate radio Wall Street giant attempting to disrupt its much smaller competitor LRN and its superior team, technology and products.”

Former 'Kevin & Bean' Co-Host to Lead New Afternoon Drive Show
MERUELO MEDIA Classic Rock KLOS/LOS ANGELES has announced that legendary co-host of the longtime KROQ/LOS ANGELES “KEVIN & BEAN SHOW," KEVIN RYDER, is joining the KLOS team to host a new afternoon show, “KEVIN & SLUGGO” featuring current KLOS personality SLUGGO debuting this THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18th at 3p (PT).
After 30 years as co-host of “KEVIN & BEAN SHOW," RYDER said, “I’m happy KLOS has lowered their standards just enough for me to slip in. Everyone at the station, starting with HEIDI AND FRANK in the morning, are having fun, and love the music they’re playing. I’m happy to be working in the afternoon, with my longtime friend SLUGGO, because one of us needs to be able to use the English language sufficiently. Plus, I need my beauty sleep to remain at the top of the modeling game. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with listeners and having fun on the air in L.A. again!"
