Comforting rituals show in media s depiction of inauguration | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 21, 2021 NEW YORK (AP) After Air Force One took Donald Trump out of Washington, an unusual Inauguration Day quickly felt more traditional even comforting for people watching at home. Virtually everyone wore masks because of the pandemic and elbow bumps outnumbered hugs among dignitaries there to see President Joe Biden take over. There was no violence, however. No security breaches. After two harrowing Wednesdays, with a riot at the Capitol and an impeachment vote, viewers this time saw familiar rituals of comity and the nation’s leaders appeal to democracy’s ideals.

Networks favorable to the outgoing president lamented his departure, focusing on how he delivered a populist message and led the development of the COVID-19 vaccines, while glossing over the 400,000 American deaths from the pandemic. Networks viewed as the opposition to Trump, including CNN and MSNBC, continued their criticism of a president now facing his second impeachment trial. On Fox Corp s Fox News, host Bill Hemmer reflected on the video address the president released Tuesday, and the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by rioters Trump incited.
