Webinar calls for Abdullah Öcalan to be freed

Guest speakers were Clare Baker from the Unite Union in Britain, former Icelandic member of parliament Ögmundur Jonasson, Australian historian John Tully and Kurdish-Australian journalist and former trade union organiser Mansour Razaghi. The webinar was introduced and chaired by Sarah Hathway, an organiser with the Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association. The webinar began with a short video showing highlights of the campaign in Australia to date, which included rallies, a car cavalcade and even a “Free Öcalan” sky banner pulled by a plane over Perth in Western Australia.

The Unite Union, which represents workers at hotels, casinos, cinema and fast food outlets, is running mobile clinics across the country as part of its Hospo Help programme to educate workers about their rights and offer advice. It says since the first lockdown, it has been constantly contacted by workers who know they have been treated unfairly, but do not know what to do about it. The problems include illegal pay cuts, no or few guaranteed hours, cancelled shifts, and a lack of sick leave and rest breaks.
