Generally speaking, remote classes are still an abysmal operation in which most students lose out, and the ones with the greatest need lose most. That assessment comes not from school administrators or researchers but from the best source of all: L.A. teachers themselves, the people who are trying to transmit skills and knowledge while giving students some sense of normality in a world gone haywire. Their sentiments are especially noteworthy considering that their labor union, United Teachers Los Angeles, has been the organization most concerned about the dangers of returning to physical classrooms.

By City News Service Dec 18, 2020 LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Members of the United Teachers Los Angeles stated today that they have come to an agreement with school district officials on a plan for distanced learning in the spring semester but some details remain to be worked out. UTLA officials announced that at 2:30 p.m., they will speak about an agreement with Los Angeles Unified School District on plans to return to distanced learning, as well as meetings regarding plans to resume in-person learning. Per the agreement, the school district and UTLA-represented employees will begin work on Jan. 11 on the new plans for distanced learning. LAUSD officials said that by Jan. 24, the district will discuss plans with UTLA on how to plan for students return to in-person instruction, abiding by county health orders.

As the pandemic continues to spread in a seemingly uncontrolled fashion, California’s leading teachers’ unions have affirmed their opposition to school openings without significantly more safety precautions, further complicating hopes for bringing more students back to school for in-person instruction. Currently, almost all students attend schools in counties in the state’s Tier One “purple” list.  That means schools are prohibited from providing in-person instruction unless they were already doing so before the county went on the purple list, are providing instruction to small groups of students with special needs, or through special waivers for K-6 students.
