British energy workers’ strikes continue
Engineers and office staff at energy company British Gas are continuing their strikes, begun January 7 against an inferior contract, with a five-day walkout. The GMB union members also held 24-hour strikes on January 20, 22, and 25, and a four-day strike is planned from today. On January 22, pickets publicly burnt the new employment contracts spelling out inferior terms.
The workers voted by an 89 percent majority for action. They are opposed to the company’s plans to “fire and rehire,” putting them on a contract with less favourable conditions and a 20 percent pay cut. The strikers include 4,000 service and repair gas engineers, 1,700 smart metering engineers, 600 central heating installers, 540 electrical engineers and 170 specialist business gas engineers. The strikers carried out socially distanced pickets throughout the country.

Northrop Grumman today announced it recently inducted the first U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) P-3 Orion aircraft for depot level maintenance at its Aircraft Maintenance and Fabrication Center in Lake Charles.
The company was awarded a contract in June for aircraft maintenance and logistics services for the P-3 fleet. In addition to depot level maintenance, the company will support daily operations of the 14 aircraft fleet operating primarily out of Jacksonville, Florida, and Corpus Christi, Texas, as well as domestic and international deployment locations. All 14 aircraft in the fleet will undergo depot inductions over the course of the contract.

The beleaguered F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program just hit another of many roadblocks in early January as the Department of Defense (DoD) formally decreed that a decision on full-rate production of the jet is on indefinite hold due to technical challenges and the impact of COVID19.
The verdict in the first week of January came only four months after Ellen Lord, undersecretary of defence for acquisition and sustainment, placed her full confidence behind the program saying that “the F-35 will complete its testing by March 2021.”
