Queen’s Speech: Key bills in PM s plan to turbo-charge pandemic recovery Plans to “create a stronger, healthier and more prosperous nation” with more than 30 new pieces of legislation Photo: PA Images / Alamy Stock Photo 11 May 2021 Boris Johnson has laid out his plans to “create a stronger, healthier and more prosperous nation” after the coronavirus pandemic with more than 30 new pieces on legislation unveiled in today’s Queen’s Speech. As part of a strong focus on enacting the prime minister’s manifesto commitment to “level up” the country, there are a number of bills on improving skills and education, as well as around housing and the environment.

The CITB is finalising its levy proposals before opening a period of consensus from 4 June 2021 to 15 August 2021 during which construction businesses will be able to comment. The UK government announced a commitment to major changes in tackling the climate emergency. The Sixth Carbon Budget aims to cut carbon emission by 78 per cent by 2035 – almost 15 years earlier than previously planned. In addition, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), chaired by Mark Carney, UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance, was launched. The Alliance unites more than 160 firms (together responsible for assets in excess of US$70 trillion) from the leading net zero initiatives across the financial system to accelerate the transition to net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.
