The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the announcement of an agreement that is expected to deliver the necessary damage control after Brexit. Based on regular updates from the EU negotiating team led by Michel Barnier, S&D MEPs welcome the agreement with cautious optimism. The European Parliament will now start the process of analysing and scrutinsing the deal to ensure that it fully respects our red lines providing for the protection of citizens, and safeguarding the peace process on the island of Ireland, the integrity of the single market and our high European social and labour standards.Â

After months of tortuous wrangling, the two sides finally reached agreement on a trade deal on Christmas Eve, just days before the end of the transition period.

“We have finally found an agreement.” These were the words of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as she relayed the news everyone had been waiting to hear.
The Christmas Eve breakthrough came after mounting speculation of an imminent deal on Wednesday as the stars appeared to finally align for the two sides.
In a press conference at 4pm CET, Von der Leyen said, “It was a long and winding road, but we have got a good deal to show for it. It is fair, it is a balanced deal, and it is the right and responsible thing to do for both sides.”

“I would like to welcome this agreement. Unfortunately, the internal politics of the British Conservative Party mean that it will not be possible for it to receive democratic scrutiny by the European Parliament before it comes into provisional effect.”
“Since the vote in 2016, the Left Group in the European Parliament have worked to minimise the damage done to the economy and to jobs, to uphold labour standards or environmental standards, to protect and defend citizens’ rights and to uphold the Good Friday Agreement and the Peace Process in Ireland. Some of this has already been secured in the Withdrawal Agreement and the Irish Protocol.

Statement by the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli and the Head of Parliament s UK Coordination Group David McAllister on the agreement reached on future EU-UK relations.
“I welcome the fact that a deal has been reached today on the future relationship between the EU and UK which the Parliament will now scrutinise in detail. The Parliament thanks and congratulates the EU and UK negotiators for their intense efforts to reach, albeit at the last minute, this historic agreement. Although I still deeply regret the UK’s decision to leave the EU, I have always believed that a negotiated settlement is in the best interests of both sides. This deal can now form the basis for us to build a new partnership.
