Poots comments on Climate Change Bill

Poots comments on Climate Change Bill Northern Ireland needs the right, rather than any climate change bill, DAERA Minister Edwin Poots MLA has said. Wednesday, 12th May 2021, 2:37 pm DAERA Minister Edwin Poots MLA announced his Green Growth plan last year. Minister Poots is pictured on the farm of Jack Blakiston Houston, where they use a range of environmentally friendly techniques that also increase profitability and reduce waste. The Minister has expressed his disappointment about the outcome of Monday’s Private Members Bill, which he says will impact negatively on the agri-food sector and the environment. He said: “The Private Members’ Bill has passed its second reading without any regard to either the long term sustainability of our hard-working agri-food sector, nor the long term achievability of the environmental targets and commitments contained within the Bill.

NI politicians vote to move Climate Change Bill to next stage

May 12, 2021 10:39 pm Politicians in Northern Ireland have voted to move a controversial environmental bill a stage closer to becoming law despite warnings it has the potential to decimate the region’s agricultural industry. The Climate Change Bill was tabled by Green Party leader Clare Bailey and passed its second stage with 58 ayes to 29 noes on Monday night (May 10). The bill will now move on to the committee stage for more detailed scrutiny before returning for further consideration. The UK’s Climate Change Committee previously warned that dairy and meat production in Northern Ireland would need to be reduced by over 50% to reach the bill’s target of net-zero by 2045.

Last modified on Thu 22 Apr 2021 16.12 EDT With just over six months to go until vital UN climate talks, Boris Johnson has urged world leaders at a virtual White House summit to step up with plans for cutting greenhouse gas emissions this decade. “It’s vital for all of us to show that this is not all about some expensive politically correct green act of ‘bunny hugging’ or however you want to put it,” the prime minister told the possibly slightly puzzled leaders. “Nothing wrong with ‘bunny hugging’ but you know what I’m driving at.” “Cake have eat,” he went on to suggest as an overriding motto, arguing that reducing carbon emissions could also be good for the economy. This followed his famous line on Brexit that when it came to cake he was “pro having it and pro eating it”.
