Experts say annual COVID-19 vaccine could be a permanent post-pandemic fixture

Professor Anthony Harnden from the UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation says the medical profession is anticipating an annual coronavirus vaccine could become a permanent feature of the post-pandemic world. Record breaking numbers of people have been vaccinated in the United Kingdom this weekend as the nation increases its vaccination capabilities with 32 new centres being set up this week. Over 75 per cent of the population over 80 years of age have received a coronavirus vaccination, however new variants remain a constant threat. The United Kingdom is on the brink of 100,000 coronavirus deaths as the Johnson government moves to introduced tougher quarantine restrictions.

On 18 January last year, I wrote my first story about a mysterious disease that had struck Wuhan, in China, and which was now spreading around the world. More than two million individuals have since died of Covid-19, almost 100,000 of them in the UK. Remarkably, 12 months to the day that the Observer published my story, I was given my first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, allowing me to follow nearly six million other newly immunised UK residents who are set to gain protection against a disease that has brought the planet to a standstill. It was a rare, comforting experience after a year of unremitting sadness and gloom.

This very high number of new positive infections of COVID-19 today emphasises the importance of complying with the restrictions put in place by the Government to prevent the spread of the virus. The huge numbers of new infections and the huge numbers of people in self isolation are putting massive pressure on the ability of the Government to continue to provide public services. In particular, there is massive pressure on the 111 and Contact Tracing services as well as the Gibraltar Health Authority and all frontline services as a whole.
