Best performing funds and investment trusts since the start of 2021

Funds investing in the UK were some of the top performers in the first quarter of this year as Britain s fast roll-out of vaccines has tempted some investors to bet on the country s recovery.  The Investment Association s UK Smaller Companies sector came top of the table, with returns of 9 per cent in the first three months of the year, while UK Equity Income funds were in third position, up 6.8 per cent, and UK All Companies up 5.8 per cent. North American smaller companies are also benefiting more than large caps from the expected economic recovery, with the average fund in that sector growing 6.9 per cent.

Amati Global Investors hires Saracen Fund Managers equity stalwart Scott McKenzie leaves Saracen after seven years to work across Amati’s fund range Amati Global Investors has hired Saracen Fund Managers’ Scott McKenzie as a portfolio manager. McKenzie (pictured) joins Amati’s investment team working with Paul Jourdan, David Stevenson, Anna Macdonald and Gareth Blades across the TB Amati UK Smaller Companies fund, Amati AIM VCT plc and the Amati Aim IHT Portfolio Service. McKenzie, who has more than 20 years’ UK equities experience, was previously head of research and fund manager on the TB Saracen UK Alpha and TB Saracen UK Income funds. He joined the firm in 2014 and launched the UK Income fund before being appointed as manager on the UK Alpha fund in June 2017. He left Saracen at the end of March.

UK equity sectors rebound in March while Baillie Gifford funds suffer

UK equity sectors had another strong month in March, as sterling rebounded and confidence in the UK returned to markets, while the reversal of fortunes for growth and value oriented strategies hurt Baillie Gifford funds.
