UK-German Roundtable on countering online harms, March 2021

6 April 2021 In March 2021, the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT), the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) and the North Rhine Westphalian Cyber Crime Agency ZAC invited UK and German stakeholders to a first virtual roundtable on the role innovation and technologies can play to fight online harms. With the aim to spur collaboration between both countries, the roundtable was hosted by UK Consul General Rafe Courage and opened by North Rhine Westphalian Minister for Justice Peter Biesenbach as well as DCMS’ Director General Susannah Storey. Participating attendees included senior executives from UK and NRW’s government, law enforcement, media authorities, industry, associations and universities.

Universities search for the new normal after Brexit German and United Kingdom representatives of universities and higher education organisations have discussed the post-Brexit future of UK-German academic relations, including how to plug the glaring gap in the UK’s Turing Scheme, the replacement for participation in the European Union’s mobility and exchange scheme Erasmus+. The discussions took place in a virtual talk organised by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and prepared by the DAAD Competence Centre for International Academic Collaborations (KIWi), and coincided with the presentation of DAAD propositions on future cooperation with the UK. Erasmus+ scholarships for UK-German student exchange will still be available for the next two years.

Germany’s federal statistics body said imports from the UK fell by more than 56% to €1.6bn (£1.4bn) in January from the same month a year ago, after the end of the Brexit transition period and start of the new trading relationship between Britain and the EU. In a reflection of disruption at the start of the year from new customs checks and border delays, German exports to the UK also dropped by 29% to €4.3bn. The figures suggest a disproportionate impact on UK-German trade in Januarycompared with other nations, with import and export activity down by just 6% for other EU states by comparison.
