Coventry University Group to open Africa Hub in Rwanda

Coventry University Group is to open a new overseas hub in Rwanda to support its links in Sub-Saharan Africa and help extend its corporate functions across the world. The hub will open in Kigali to coincide with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in the capital in June. It is part of the university’s plan to develop a sustainable network of multi-faceted overseas offices. The ambition is to have a presence near to its stakeholders in key regions and follows the success of the Singapore and Dubai hubs. The aim is to provide organisations and individuals throughout the world with regional access to the growing academic, research and commercial expertise that exists within all areas of the Coventry University Group.

Monday, April 26, 2021 The United States (US) hosted the Leaders Summit on Climate this week, with transatlantic partners affirming commitments on reducing emissions and growing green, sustainable jobs.  The United Kingdom (UK) and the US also focused on issues with respect to Russia, while the European Union (EU) published a legislative package related to sustainable finance and sustainable corporate reporting. Meanwhile, the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine pause may be coming to an end, as European and American officials concluded the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks.  While the White House has yet to weigh in on resuming J&J inoculations in the United States, the European Union looks to move forward with adding the vaccine to its supply.

Trade benefits of UK freeports limited , says parliamentary committee

As the UK government prepares to roll out its new freeports policy to “turbo-charge” post-Brexit trade, a report released today by the International Trade Committee questions the real impact of the special trade zones on British exports. The Conservative government made a commitment to establishing freeports – areas that are inside the geographic boundary of a country, but are legally considered outside the country for customs purposes – in its 2019 election manifesto, as part of wider plans for post-Brexit Britain. During his budget speech last month, Rishi Sunak, chancellor of the exchequer, announced eight freeport locations in England, saying that they would “encourage free trade and reinforce [the UK’s] position as an outward-looking, trading nation, open to the world”.

6 April 2021 In March 2021, the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT), the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) and the North Rhine Westphalian Cyber Crime Agency ZAC invited UK and German stakeholders to a first virtual roundtable on the role innovation and technologies can play to fight online harms. With the aim to spur collaboration between both countries, the roundtable was hosted by UK Consul General Rafe Courage and opened by North Rhine Westphalian Minister for Justice Peter Biesenbach as well as DCMS’ Director General Susannah Storey. Participating attendees included senior executives from UK and NRW’s government, law enforcement, media authorities, industry, associations and universities.
