Taking surveillance capitalism to a new extreme of existence

Surveillance capitalism, a term coined by Shoshana Zuboff in her book The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, is the business of taking people’s data and using it to make a profit. All aspects of human experience are thus turned into data (enumerated) to be used and sold to business, potentially affecting our free will. Google was the trailblazer in this field and now the digital Leviathan, Facebook, has its own plans and manifesto. Allegedly, they already have an algorithm which can forecast our views better than our spouses and they want its users to be a new global community, feeding Facebook with their data and living in a magnified echo chamber and members of a new ideological movement.

A new commitment made by G7 digital and technology ministers to adopt electronic transferable records in international trade transactions has been hailed as a “momentous step forward” for trade digitisation, and businesses are being called upon to get ready for digital trade now – or risk being left behind. At a meeting held last week, the intergovernmental organisation, made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, agreed a framework that will champion the work of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and promote the adoption of its Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (MLETR).
