Jeff Rubin: unpacking the impact of globalisation on working people

Jeff Rubin: unpacking the impact of globalisation on working people Rubin makes the connection between the anxiety – if not anger – about the hollowing out of the US industrial heartlands, the coastal regions that fuelled England’s Brexit vote and the so-called populist revolts against the political class in France An overgrown parking lot lies empty in front of the closed Packard Electric complex on October 29, 2012 in Warren, Ohio. Warren, like much of rust belt Ohio, had suffered through long-term economic decline, even before the 2010s recession. Letters: We Scots didn t abandon Labour, Labour abandoned us

THE vacuous nature of contemporary politics is neatly summed up by Sir Keir Starmer saying “Labour needs to rebuild trust” ( Sir Keir Starmer: Labour has a lot of work to do to regain ground in Scotland , The Herald, January 22). If he feels we can’t trust his party he needs to elaborate on why this is, just what acts detrimental to the electorate has his organisation perpetrated that he feels led us to not trust them? He himself encapsulates the divide in society when a millionaire with the lifestyle associated with that leads the party that was created to look after the working class, the poor and the disenfranchised and is well paid by the electorate to do so. Both major parties at Westminster have become different faces of the same coin in the same pocket.

IHRA definition of anti-Semitism divides US Jews ahead of Biden presidency

(Stefan Rousseau/PA Images via Getty Images/ via JTA /SUE) JTA When is it anti-Semitic to criticize Israel? Anti-Semitism signifies hatred of Jews and the ways that hatred is perpetuated through age-old conspiracy theories and their modern variants. But what about when that hatred is expressed through rhetoric about the Jewish state? Is anti-Zionism anti-Semitism? Those questions have divided American Jews in recent years and are continuing to do so, as of last week. Establishment Jewish groups want US President-elect Joe Biden’s administration to treat some anti-Israel speech as anti-Semitism. Progressive Jewish groups disagree, worried about chilling or criminalizing legitimate criticism of Israeli policy.
