The funeral of Davey Reilly arrives at St Mary’s Cemetery in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.
Nearly 300 mourners attended St Mary’s Cemetery in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim on Thursday, to lay to rest a 22-year-old man who recently died in Britain.
Members of the Travelling community in Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford town were joined by relatives living in Britain for the funeral of Davey Reilly which drew a large Garda presence to the town for the past two days.

Two people have been arrested and more than 80 fixed penalty notices handed out following a Traveller funeral in Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday, which attracted nearly 300 mourners despite Covid-19 restriction rules.
Following the burial at St Mary’s Cemetery in the Leitrim town, large numbers went to a marquee on a local halting site, with some mourners breaking through a Garda cordon to get there.
Principal of Scoil Mhuire in Carrick-on-Shannon, Caroline Healy, has written to the parents of her Traveller pupils, expressing sympathy on their loss, but reminding them to follow necessary precautions, including quarantine.

Pavee Point, the organisation that represents members of the Travelling and Roma communities in Ireland, has said it was “shocked” and “angered” after images emerged online showing enormous crowds of people attending a funeral in Co. Leitrim on Wednesday and Thursday last.
Almost 300 mourners attended the funeral of Davey Reilly at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Carrick-On-Shannon, Co Leitrim on Thursday. Members of the Travelling Community in Carrick-On-Shannon & Longford Town were joined by relatives from Britain for the funeral.
Dozens of UK-Registered vehicles were seen in the town over the two days. Gardaí set up checkpoints on the N4 approach to the town, and on other approach roads.
