Earlier this week, I was able to speak with Dr. Everett McCorvey who has been at the University of Kentucky for 29 years. Dr. McCorvey was the first African American to graduate with a doctoral degree in music from the University of Alabama. He is deeply passionate about ensuring all our students have the opportunity to succeed.
Where are you from, and how did you get here?
I was educated in the public schools growing up in Montgomery, Alabama. Actually, President Capilouto and I went to the same high school, just at different times.
After graduating high school, I went to the University of Alabama where I completed two degrees – a bachelor’s and a master’s – in vocal performance. Then, I moved to New York and freelanced for about 5 years before going back to the University of Alabama to complete my doctorate. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 10, 2020) The Singletary Center for the Arts may be closed to the public, but its halls have been anything but empty this semester. This holiday season, the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts (CFA) will release two online vocal music concerts that celebrate the sounds of the season. While families and audiences may not be able to come together in the customary sense, these holiday traditions from UK s School of Music aim to bring the university and the Central Kentucky community together virtually from the safety of their homes.
