Until recently, Apple took a 30 percent commission on all app sales. Most app developers feel the cut is unjustifiable and critics believe that it’s an abuse of Apple’s market dominance.

BBC News reported the action was filed with the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) and, if approved, could result in Apple being liable for damages of up to £1.5 billion. The case covers up to 20 million UK consumers who made a purchase from the App Store since October 2015. Consumers reportedly claimed Apple intentionally restricted competition and abused its market dominance through its commission.

Filed on behalf of almost 20 million iPhone and iPad users, the case claims that Apple s 30 percent commission charged on App Store purchases is excessive and unlawful and that the company s practices breach competition law in the UK and Europe. The case, if approved by the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT), will seek damages of up to £1.5 billion, and will include around 19.6 million users eligible for compensation in the UK.
