Hospitality worst-hit as unemployment rises again

There were 819,000 fewer workers on UK company payrolls in November than at the start of the pandemic, official figures show.
Hospitality was the worst hit sector, accounting for a third of the job losses, followed by retail, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The unemployment rate rose to 4.9% in the three months to October, with the jobless total up to 1.7 million people.
Redundancies hit a record high over the period.
Why has hospitality suffered so much?
While there have been significant job losses in other sectors such as aviation and manufacturing, hospitality has been the most affected by coronavirus restrictions this year.
The fast food giant announced Tuesday it would use its UK Instagram account to promote independent restaurants for free. There are many great dishes from thousands of restaurants that deserve to be as famous as the Whopper, Burger King wrote in a post on Instagram. As we head into tier three across more parts of the country, it s clear independent restaurants need all our support. Until they can reopen, they can advertise on our Instagram for free.

Restaurants that want to take part need to upload their posts to Instagram with the hashtag #WhopperAndFriends, and Burger King will repost them on its own Instagram account to its 30,000 followers.

London mayor Sadiq Khan is calling on the government to force the public to wear masks in public, to shut down secondary schools, and cancel Christmas
Mayor Khan, of the left-wing Labour party, published a statement demanding “regular asymptomatic testing [be] extended to all those unable to work from home and to [pupils] and staff at London’s secondary schools, sixth-form college and FE [Further Education] colleges,” adding that “Face coverings should also be made mandatory in busy outdoor public spaces, given the numbers on our high streets in the run-up to Christmas.”
