US and Iran Push Back Reports of Prisoner Exchange
US and Iran officials have each pushed back reports in Tehran’s media of a prisoner exchange, with Iranians held in the US swapped for political detainees in Iran.
Iranian State TV claimed four American political prisoners would be exchanged for four Iranians in the US, detained over sanctions violations, and the release of $7 billion in frozen Iranian funds in South Korea.
In addition, Anglo-Iranian charity Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, held since April 2016, would be traded for £400 million ($552 million), held by the UK over a pre-Revolution deal for Chieftain tanks that were never delivered.
Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations are gathering in London for their first in-person meeting since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
The week is billed by the United Kingdom, which holds the group’s rotating presidency, as a chance to reassert the West’s influence and address issues such as coronavirus recovery, climate change and growing tensions with Russia and China.
It will launch with talks between UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The ministers will also lay the groundwork for US President Joe Biden’s first scheduled trip abroad since taking office – a June G7 summit in the UK meant to revive cooperation with traditional allies after years of friction under former President Donald Trump.

US denies Iran claims of prisoner deal; UK plays it down
Washington, May 3:The United States and Iran are in active talks over the release of prisoners, a person familiar with the discussions said Sunday as Washington denied a report by Iranian state-run television that deals had been struck.
Prisoner swaps between the US and Iran are not uncommon and both countries in recent years have routinely sought the release of detainees.
But any movement between the two countries is particularly sensitive as the Biden administration looks to restart nuclear talks. A 2015 atomic accord between the nations included prisoner exchanges.
