New G7 clinical trials charter to bolster global health defences International health ministers agree new principles to share life-saving evidence and data to combat future pandemics. From: 4 June 2021 Commitments lay strong foundation for leaders’ summit in Cornwall next week Health ministers from some of the world’s largest democracies have committed to a new international agreement making it easier and quicker to share results from vaccine and therapeutic trials to tackle COVID-19 and prevent future health threats. Following the conclusion of the UK-hosted, in-person G7 Health Ministers’ meeting in Oxford, a Therapeutics and Vaccines Clinical Trials Charter will be rapidly implemented. This will help deliver high-quality, reliable and comparable evidence from international clinical trials to speed up access to approved treatments and vaccines, benefiting people in the UK and globally.

Nissan planning new electric vehicle battery gigafactory in Sunderland

Nissan Motor Co is understood to be asking the British government to provide tens of millions of US dollars to build a new electric vehicle (EV) battery “gigafactory” in Sunderland, England. The Japanese automaker hopes to support the construction of a factory that could produce up to 200,000 batteries a year at Nissan’s existing Sunderland site. The facility would be run by the company’s Chinese battery maker, Envision AESC (遠景). It is scheduled to open in 2024 and would produce 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery capacity a year, far more than Nissan’s existing Sunderland plant, which has a capacity of 1.9GWh. It

Tuesday, May 11, 2021 In a surprising announcement last week, the United States (US) reversed course on its position towards the COVID-10 TRIPS Agreement waiver negotiations, saying it would negotiate a waiver at the World Trade Organization (WTO).  US Republican lawmakers and the pharmaceutical industry pushed back on the decision, warning it would allow the People’s Republic of China (“China”) to gain access to American innovation.  Meanwhile, tension between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) flared this past week over fishery rights with an English Channel island, Jersey.  The UK hosted Group of Seven (G7) meetings and focused on climate change, Viet Nam and India.  And the European Commission released its long-anticipated proposed regulation related to distortive foreign subsidies, along with its update to the EU’s Industrial Strategy.
