THE week beginning January 18 is the week of prayer for Christian Unity. It ends on January 25, the day that we celebrate the Conversion of St Paul, the great missionary of the early Church. Jesus prays in his personal prayer, to be found in the Gospel of St John chapter 17, that all his followers “may be one”. Christians today are not one, but are divided into very many different groups. There has been a great deal of work done to bring Christians together, but the closest that we have got is “unity in diversity.” Perhaps this is a good thing because it reflects our differences but acknowledges our unity.
AFTER a most challenging week for everyone and the start of a period of extended restrictions to curb the virus, I want to focus on the really positive news of the vaccination roll-out. We face some difficult weeks ahead but I am also sure the end is now in sight. The additional £4.6bn economic support measures I announced on Tuesday are designed to help businesses through to the spring. I was really encouraged to see the start of the immunisation programme here in North Yorkshire. At the vaccination hub at the Northallerton Forum I witnessed the programme underway with elderly care home residents receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
RATHER than an explosion to topple it, demolition teams took down the steeple of the former United Reformed Church on Blackburn’s Audley Range stone by stone in 1989. The steeple was the last visible sign that a church had stood on the site which was being cleared to make way for additional housing and road remodelling. If you look closely you can see one of the demolition men being hoisted to the top of the steeple in a ‘cage’ attached to the giant crane which dominated the skyline. The stone was being salvaged for use elsewhere. Churchgoers had amalgamated with the congregation at Brownhill United Reformed Church to continue their worship.
