January 8, 2021 The people of Venezuela have dealt another decisive blow against US domination in Latin America. On December 6, 2020, more than 6.2 million Venezuelans voted for a new National Assembly in what was Venezuela’s 25th election in the 21 years since the Bolivarian revolution began. Despite being under massive pressure from the US-led war on Venezuela and the Covid-19 pandemic, the people of Venezuela went to the polls and delivered the National Assembly back into the service of the Bolivarian revolution. As reported by the National Electoral Council, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), which is the political party of the revolutionary government of Venezuela, won 69 percent of the votes – and 253 out of 277 seats in the assembly. With a majority of the opposition opting to boycott the December 6 National Assembly elections, the governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) won more than 67% of the vote. It now has a huge majority inside parliament  which has expanded from 177 to 277 deputies. Due to this expansion, a number of new deputies, many of them grassroots revolutionaries, will be entering parliament for the first time. One of them is Melitza Orellana, who started her activism as a high school student in 1999, the year Hugo Chavez assumed the presidency for the first time. Since then, Orellana has worked closely with the country’s campesino movement and been heavily involved in promoting community councils and communes as expressions of radical local democracy.

Jorge Rodriguez, the former communication and information minister, took over Juan Guaido’s position as full-seat deputy. “There are crimes that must be paid,” Rodriguez said about the outgoing legislators. Jose Gregorio Correa, an outgoing legislator, delivered a speech in the National Assembly chambers. He stood in front of the new 277 legislators. There are 253 members including 219 members of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela who belong to a left-wing electoral alliance.
